Latest Windows 11 Dev Build Is Out With Copilot Key Remapping 16

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Dev build 26120.1930, which contains the ability to remap the Copilot key. The changes are rolling out gradually to Dev Insiders with the "Get the latest features as soon as they are available" toggle on. Neowin reports: [H]ere are the updates that are also gradually rolling out, but this time for all Dev Insiders: "We are adding the ability to configure the Copilot key. You can choose to have the Copilot key launch an app that is MSIX packaged and signed, thus indicating the app meets security and privacy requirements to keep customers safe. The key will continue to launch Copilot on devices that have the Copilot app installed until a customer selects a different experience. This setting can be found via Settings - Personalization - Text input. If the keyboard connected to your PC does not have a Copilot key, adjusting this setting will not do anything. We are planning further refinements to this experience in a future flight." Other changes introduced in the build include a new simplified Chinese font, Windows Sandbox improvements, and several bug fixes. Full release notes are available here.

... further refinements to this experience ...

Translation: When we can force ^H^H^H improve Microsoft Recall on all computers, we will mark this a Critical Update, so it can never be removed.

At the moment, Microsoft is giving their customers a choice: We know Microsoft disapproves of that and will soon decide it knows what's best (for its quarterly earnings statement).

    • Translation: When we can force ^H^H^H improve Microsoft Recall on all computers, we will mark this a Critical Update, so it can never be removed.

Recall has literally been announced as a completely removable component including the underlying AI model. It has nothing to do with CoPilot or the button here.

There's so many things to complain about Microsoft and their AI rubbish. If you've already run out of content to the point of creating conspiracy theories you're really not at all paying attention. In fact you're playing into Microsoft's hand by just showing the complaints against them are baseless ramblings not to be taken seriously.

      Please don't do

There will always be a way to remove it because some businesses will not allow screenshots of their systems to be kept.

If they could force it they already would have with CoPilot, Cortana, Edge, Bing, OneDrive, Teams, Office 365, Microsoft Store, Candy Crush, and all the other crap they have bundled over the years.

  • I mostly use Linux Mint these days, but now I know I'll be ready for the next time I boot Windows that I'll be getting that "Hi! I'm updating your computer. You can't use it right now. Almost done. I'm going to reboot now. Don't lose hope, updating is almost completed. Installing finishing touches. Let's reboot again"

  • I was wondering what people would end up doing with the CoPilot key, and well, here we are. Honestly, it's good that Microsoft is making an official way of doing this versus just leaving to a third-party hack.

    • Also WTF? Can't you remap all keys however you feel like under Windows? Linux has had xmodmap since about 10 years before linux even existed (as it were).

      • you can in general [microsoft.com] but ISTR that some keys used to be easier to remap than others and I haven't looked into actually doing it at all recently, so I don't know the state of it today. I would assume without reading TFA though that this is actually about Microsoft allowing you to change what that key[sym] launches.

  • Jeebus, like I needed another key shrinking my spacebar or arrow key area.

Kill it with fire. Once the AI bubble pops, this key might as well be called the 'Clippy' key.

  • So wait, the process that occurs, when the keyboard is pressed - it can now result in a different outcome?

I honestly didn't know what to expect in the year of our Lord, 2024. But sufficient technological advancement as to allow differing processes to occur when a key on the keyboard is pressed... we're living in the future.

  • "[...] until a customer selects a different experience. [...] We are planning further refinements to this experience [...]"

Everything is an "experience" nowadays, it's ridiculous and annoys me so much. Keep that terminology in your C-level PowerPoints, but try to write like a human being in public. I want my computer to do the work I need it to do, I don't want it to give me an "experience".

Your good nature will bring you unbounded happiness.

Working...
