They didn't copy the part where they massively reduced their manufacturing costs, they figured that part out on their own.
What's to figure out? The west abolished indentured labor a century and a half ago. The west followed up by giving workers rights to a minimum wage, work safety, and decent hours (compared to the horrible conditions prior to government regulation). Finally the west decided that having clean water, soil, and air was important too.
